Buying a Used Car in Fresno:
The Pre-Purchase Checklist

Fresno's used car market is active — and largely unregulated when it comes to private sales. A seller in California is not required to disclose known mechanical problems unless directly asked. The burden of due diligence is entirely on the buyer. Here's what to check, what the red flags are, and why a professional inspection is worth far more than it costs.

Start with the Listing and Title

Before you see the car in person, run the VIN through a history report (Carfax or NMVTIS). Look for: salvage title, odometer rollback flags, flood damage history, and number of previous owners. A salvage title car can still be a good deal — but only if you know it's salvage and price accordingly. A car represented as clean title with a salvage history is fraud.

At the Car — Visual Inspection

Walk around the entire car in good lighting and look for: inconsistent panel gaps (indicating prior collision repair), paint color mismatches between panels, overspray on trim or rubber seals, and fresh undercoating in the wheel wells (can hide rust or collision damage). Check all door gaps are even. Rust in California cars is less common than northern states but does occur — check the lower door edges, rocker panels, and wheel wells.

Under the Hood

Check oil level and condition (dark brown is normal; black and gritty means it's overdue; milky means coolant contamination — a potential head gasket problem). Check coolant level and condition (should be clear to light yellow, not rust brown). Look for oil stains or leaks around the engine bay. A clean engine bay can mean well-maintained — or can mean the seller steam-cleaned it to hide leaks. Look at hoses for cracks and soft spots.

The Test Drive

During the test drive: listen for brake squeal or grinding. Feel for pulsing through the brake pedal (warped rotors). Notice whether the car pulls to one side under braking. Check that AC blows cold — important in Fresno and a required TNC inspection item if you plan to rideshare. Listen for clunks over bumps (worn suspension). Check that all gears shift smoothly, including reverse.

Any mechanic, auto parts store, or $30 OBD reader can clear a check engine light. Some Fresno private sellers do this before listing to avoid questions. The code is gone from active memory — but the underlying problem isn't fixed.
